Coconut Vinegar 101 + Coconut Vinegar Dressing (1)

What is coconut vinegar?

The sap of the flowers of coconut trees undergoes a fermentation process, similar to that of apple cider vinegar and balsamic vinegar, to create raw coconut vinegar. Coconut vinegar can be used like apple cider vinegar and may be used in salad dressings, beverages and baking. This vinegar does not have a coconutty flavor, but a smooth vinegar flavor that blends well in many recipes.

Coconut vinegar provides a range of health benefits in general. It is rich in essential amino acids, as well as vitamins and wide range of minerals. On the other hand, it is also an ideal complement for all those people who want to lose body fat, since among its many benefits is the reduction of appetite. Although until not long ago coconut oil was one of the best-known coconut products, the vinegar is becoming present in more and more homes due to the great similar benefits it provides to the body as coconut oil.

Benefits Of Coconut Vinegar

One of the great benefits of coconut vinegar is the regulation of healthy digestion. The reason for this is that this derivative contains around 15 amino acids that help the body to carry out digestion in a much faster and more efficient way. That is why its consumption is very beneficial both for those people who have specific digestion problems and for those who simply want to improve it.

May Reduce Appetite

Similar to apple cider vinegar, coconut vinegar is a great ally for those people who are looking to reduce their body weight. The secret is that its consumption reduces blood sugar and as a consequence decreases appetite and anxiety resulting in weight loss and a healthy gut. Just mix two tablespoons of vinegar in a glass of water at room temperature, mix well and consume before each meal. Or you can easily use it in salad dressings.

Benefits The Immune System

Coconut vinegar is rich in vitamins and minerals that strengthen the immune system. In addition to this, it also contains several agents that perform antibacterial functions, so they attack microbes and infections more efficiently. In this aspect, the consumption of this vinegar on a regular basis may helps prevent different conditions such as the flu or the common cold and may build a stronger immune system.

Low Glycemic Index

The glycemic index is a rating system, ranging between 0 and 100, which indicates the level to which food products affect blood-glucose fluctuations. According to The Mayo Clinic, foods with a glycemic index of 55 and under are considered low. Raw coconut vinegar, which may be incorporated into dressings or marinades, ranks 35 on the glycemic index scale.

A carbohydrate with a higher glycemic index rating may induce spikes in blood glucose levels, while a carbohydrate with a lower glycemic index will promote blood-glucose stability.

A small study published in “The Journal of the American Medical Association” discovered that diabetic patients following a low-glycemic diet exhibited greater improvements in glycemic control measures and heart disease risk factors over diabetic patients following a fiber-rich diet plan. Organic raw coconut vinegar’s low glycemic rating would make it an ideal food choice for individuals pursuing a healthy diet. Use coconut vinegar along with other low glycemic foods for best results.

More Energy

This natural product also helps to energize those who consume it on a regular basis. The reason for this lies in the micronutrients and mineral content present in it, such as iron, potassium, and magnesium.

Nutritional Composition of Organic Raw Coconut Vinegar

While coconut milk, which is derived from the meat of the coconut, is high in fat and calories, coconut water is low in calories and high in fiber, potassium, and sodium — and is recommended as an alternative to sports drinks. Organic raw coconut water vinegar is a fermented version of coconut water used in salads, dips, and dressings. Because it is used in very small amounts, organic raw coconut water vinegar does not contribute much to your overall nutritional intake.

Calories

Organic coconut vinegar contains just 5 calories per 2 tbsp. serving. As a fewer calories condiment, you can use it to add flavor to foods without adding too many additional calories. In addition to using it to make salads, dips, and dressings with a little mustard, you can also use it to make adobo chicken, coconut-flavored barbecue sauce, or coconut-flavored ricotta.

Carbohydrates

Coconut vinegar does not contain any carbohydrates. As a carbohydrate-free food, people with diabetes, or those following a low-carbohydrate diet, can safely use the vinegar without adding carbohydrates to their meals. Carbohydrates are an important nutrient, providing your body with energy. But most of your carbohydrates should come from healthy sources such as grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Protein

In addition to being carbohydrate-free, raw coconut vinegar is also protein free. Like, carbohydrates, protein is also an essential nutrient your body uses to make the proteins found in your cells, muscles, and organs. You should get 10 to 35 percent of your calories from protein.

Fat

While coconut milk is high in fat and saturated fat, with 7 g of total fat and 6 g of saturated fat per 2 tbsp. serving, organic raw coconut water vinegar contains 0 g of fat in a 2 tbsp. serving. As a fat-free condiment, coconut water makes a healthy choice for adding flavor to your food and good gut health.

Sodium

This vinegar is also very low in sodium, with 5 mg per 2 tbsp. serving. If you have concerns about the sodium in your diet, you can safely use the coconut water vinegar as a flavor enhancer without increasing your overall sodium intake.

Vitamins and Minerals

The sap used to create raw coconut vinegar contains 65 minerals, such as vitamin c, b vitamins, phosphorus, potassium, iron, sulfur, boron, magnesium, copper, zinc, and manganese. Because coconut trees often reside along coastal shores, the roots absorb the minerals found in seawater. The minerals then travel upward and get disbursed among several parts of the tree, including the sap.

FAQ

What is coconut vinegar and how is it made?

The vinegar made from fermentable coconut sap is called coconut vinegar and it has many health benefits. The sap of coconut blossoms is fermented with a mother culture. It’s an 8- to 12-month fermentation process and results in a light colored vinegar.

What does coconut vinegar taste like?

It has a slightly milder taste than apple cider vinegar and has a nice tangy taste.

Can coconut vinegar be used topically?

Yes, vinegar can be used on the skin and hair. I make a face toner with a mix of vinegar and water. I also use in in my homemade hair rinse, which consists of 1 ounce of vinegar mixed with 7 ounces of water. Add a few drops of essential oils and shake well. Spray the vinegar rinse on your hair after you shower. It’ll leave your hair feeling moisturized and clean.

Potential Side Effects

Although coconut vinegar is rich in vitamins and minerals, vinegar, in general, is very acidic due to the acetic acid. Acidic food products have a damaging effect on teeth enamel and may adversely impact potassium levels.

However, an observational study notes that metabolized vinegar becomes alkaline — meaning the level of acidity has been neutralized. Allergic reactions and additional side effects are also unknown. Consult with your healthcare provider prior to ingesting raw coconut vinegar.
