National shows over the summer provide endless fun for the whole family. Often, the hard work of the young people behind the scenes making these events happen goes unnoticed. The National Junior Swine Association (NJSA) and Team Purebred (TPB) junior boards are the unsung heroes, dedicating countless hours to meticulously planning every detail of these events. Their efforts ensure not only well-organized shows but also a variety of activities that bring joy to everyone involved.
A junior livestock board offers a wide range of opportunities. Many join the junior board because of their burning passion for our industry. For those transitioning from their time in the show ring, joining a junior board can provide a renewed sense of purpose. Although stepping away from the show ring can be difficult, working behind the scenes can open up an entirely new realm of possibilities. Through an experience like this, individuals develop qualities such as diligence, responsibility, dependability, and a strong work ethic. While the job can be demanding, the benefits far outweigh the challenges.
NJSA Junior Board President Paige Vierra from Maxwell, California is currently studying agricultural education and animal science at Oklahoma State University. From a very young age, she developed a deep interest in showing pigs, quickly realizing it was her niche. She pursued this passion, competing in pig shows at the local, state and national levels. Over the years, her dedication to the livestock industry has only grown stronger, significantly shaping both her educational and career aspirations. The experiences and knowledge she has gained through showing pigs has fueled her commitment to this industry. She says, “My time on the board has been incredibly valuable and cherished. Team Purebred Junior Board President, Grayson Tedrow is from Quincy, Illinois. Grayson has shown pigs for 12 years and has been attending Team Purebred events for 6 years. He is now finishing up his second term on the junior board. Grayson says his reason for joining the junior board was simple, “I want to inspire the younger generation to never give up on their goals and work toward a better day in the show ring. Passion is what motivates me to get up every day and work hard to achieve my goals.''
When questioned about their motivation for joining the junior board, both members shared similar sentiments. They have observed numerous peers in their current positions, witnessing their development and the bonds they've formed. For both, building these relationships and contributing to their community and industry is crucial. Grayson adds, “One of my goals while being on the board was to strengthen the connection between the junior exhibitors and breeders.”
Serving on a junior board holds a lot of responsibility — perhaps the biggest one, being a mentor for the youth and inspiring the next generation.
Paige says, “Being influential to the younger generation is something I've always dreamed of. Throughout my career, I have looked up to many leaders in the industry, and I have made it my goal to be a role model and positively impact younger members.” She adds, “I find joy in working with kids because their enthusiasm and excitement at the shows are contagious. Inspiring and guiding them brings a sense of fulfillment to me.”
Grayson says, “The biggest thing that I have learned while being on the board is to always keep the end result in mind, and that is to give the kids a good experience while teaching them leadership and life skills. I want to make sure that they have the skills that they need to help the next generation of showmen achieve their goals.”
With the summer show season in full swing, there is much excitement ahead for both junior boards. With that excitement comes a heart of gratitude as both Paige and Grayson reflect on their time spent on their respective junior boards.
Paige says, “My time on the board has been nothing short of fulfilling and rewarding. I will always cherish these years, as they have brought me new opportunities, introduced me to incredible people, and created unforgettable memories.” She adds, “Serving on the board has paved a significant path in my life and given me a sense of purpose within the industry.”
As they near the end of their terms, both individuals eagerly urge anyone looking to make an impact in the industry to consider applying for a junior board position.
Grayson says, “I would encourage everyone interested in expanding their knowledge and networking within the livestock industry to consider running for a junior board position.” He adds, “It was undoubtedly one of the best decisions I have ever made, and I will forever be grateful for the opportunities I have been given.”
